Hi...I'm a coin dealer in the Midwest, and here's the CORRECT answer. Do NOT clean, polish, or do anything to try to alter the appearance of a collectible coin. You can and will reduce, if not ruin, its value. In the case of your 1916 Lincoln Cent...if it is in "average circulated" condition, its value is likely less than $1. I will assume this from the fact that you feel the need to clean it, so it must be dark from being heavily circulated. Although your particular coin is common, it is a good idea to always leave a collectible coin in its original uncleaned state. If you have questions, take it to a dealer or knowledgeable collector. Hope this info helped.

I would not use any type of harsh cleaner.Just soap and water. But try not to rub any old coin too much.It will take away from the characteristics minted in the coin.
I learned this the hard way.
Always get 2 offers when selling coins. There are too many crooks out there...

Do not polish your coin, it will decrease its value to collectors. Take it to a coin dealer for an evaluation of its worth.
