Use more shaving cream, sharper razor, and go slower....it will also help to soak in warm water for about 10 minutes before shaving as it makes the hair softer and easier to remove. Giving your legs a good blast of icy cold water right before you shave will also give you a closer shave so you might get an extra day or two in between shaves....good luck, you'll get the hang of it.

I had a lot of trouble cutting my legs when I first started learning to shave. My mom is a bit of a cheapskate and liked to buy the daisy razors, and I think there might have been a connection, since when I switched to the better kind (back when the sensor was the one and only "new kind"), I didn't have so much trouble. I happen to have pretty moist skin overall, and I found shaving in the shower with nothing else worked best for me...except in the winter when my legs tend to get drier and I would have to remember to use lotion before I shaved.
So I would try getting one of the newer razor kinds (sensor, venus, whatever, but not one of those battery or plug in ones yet) and moisturize your legs often if they are dry.
If you're younger, it might also be inexperience. I have noticed that now I can use one of the "cheap razors" sometimes and I won't cut my legs, so it might be that I got to be better at shaving or my body "changed."
Good luck...this is one of those things that's hard to give advice on since each woman is different and needs to find her own thing that works.

If you are using disposables, buy a better quality type. I used to use the cheapo 12 for $3 kind and I'd nick myself all the time regardless of whether I used shaving cream or the age of the razor. I got a free sample of the Schick Quattro for women in December 2005 and I am now hooked. Smooth, nick free, pain free, and fast. You have to buy replacement heads. There are lots of these types of razors on sale these days.

Take your time! Just go slower and use less pressure. Another thing that may help is try using more shaving lotion. In time, you'll find the best way that works for you. Also, beware of the cheap razors. I use Schick Quattro for Women and it's one of the best razors I've ever used. But every woman has their own preference when it comes to these things.

like the different individuals are asserting, in case you basically desire bangs, the stylist shouldn't value you lots. So a 'lil funds could be nicely worth it, as adverse to doing it your self and taking the prospect of messing it up.
