Well for one it has one of the greatest art collections in the world. Above and beyond that, it is really significant to the history of France. It started as a fortress and then was the official royal residence for the King of France.

First, it has some of the most famous art works in the Western world, including both paintings and sculptures. Some of the stuff there is really old. In fact, I think it really lacks some more recent (<200 years old) stuff. Second, it is HUGE. There is really no way to see the entire thing in a day if you are trying to actually see it all instead of just running through like a tourist. The Louvre is the most famous mueseum in a city that has art mueseums on every corner.

One of the world's largest Museums, host to some of the world's most famous paintings, sculptures and sketches, and known by almost everyone on the planet. I'd say its one of the most popular reasons to travel to France.
