Yeah, my Friend told me that she came to visit NYC one time, and had the following conversation with a girl she had met there:
"So, where are you from?"
"Rhode Island."
"Long Island? Oh, do you happen to know so-and-so from there?"
"No. I said I'm from Rhode Island"
"Oh, isn't that part of New York?"
And the six New England states are: Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut.

Lets get it straight here. I don't have friends that are so geographically deficient.
In order by size
Rhode Island
Connecticut
Massachusetts
Vermont
New Hampshire
Maine
New York touches Connecticut and Massachusetts. The major highways to escape NY into NE is I-95 into Connecticut, I-84 into Connecticut and I-90 into Massachusetts.
There is no better place to get and eat Lobster than New England. Everyone else must wait. (poor Vermont, but they have some awesome Maple Sugar)

Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massechesetts, Conneticut, Rhode Island. I don't know why people think NY is in New England. Maybe the same reason a sizable percent of HS grads cant find Mexico.

I guess it's the "new" and the fact that it's right next to New England, which consists of Connecticut, Rhode Island, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Maine.
