I see that there is a new movie coming out and Superman has been mysteriously absent for a long time. Where did he go and how long was he gone? Why did he choose to leave for so long. Why do i care so much anyway?

He went to the ruins of Krypton to see if there were any survivors.
In the San Diego Comic-Con footage, there's this exchange:
MARTHA KENT : Did you find what you were looking for?
CLARK KENT :That place was a grave yard... I'm all that's left.
He was gone for 5 years. That's how long it took him to get to Krypton in his ship and return to Earth.

From what I can find, they're not saying. The information on most movie review sites only says, "Following a mysterious disappearance of several years, Superman returns ..."
The official movie site reads, "the worlds crises have gone unheeded for five long years since Superman's mysterious disappearance."
So it seems they're not telling us yet. Maybe it will be in the movie.
