The area is Nellis Air Force Range and nuclear test site, more commonly known as Area 51, (the name is derived from the way the country was divided according to old maps). It was founded in 1954 and its exact location is at the heart of area 51, Groom Lake. But you can't go there, you can't even take a photograph without the risk of being fined, sent to jail or even killed.
In fact, the military denied its very existence until they were forced to admit it in 1994.

I took my family there myself in 2000. About twenty minutes North of Las Vegas, you take a highway west. I can't find the exact number, but it even was renamed the extra terrestrial highwasy after the release of Indepedance Day with Wil Smith.
Anyway, while traveling west, about 45 minutes, you will see a dirt road going southwest. You know it is the right road, because there is an ordinary black mailbox right of the highway, literally in the middle of nowhere. That road takes you to an area close to 51 called Freedom ridge. Now just a few years ago, an SUV will stop you as you get close. It was real creepy.
For now, you best bet is to Google Lil Ale Inn. It is this place where they stuck two double wide trailers together, and made a musuem, bar, and campy souvenir shop dedicated to Area 51.It is past the turn-off dirt road if you are traveling West from Vegas.
Good luck. It actually was a real fun side trip.

It's about an hour-and-a-half outside of Las Vegas on Groom Air Force Base. I drove all around it once (on a motorcycle in a sandstorm, spoooky!). Very strange place. Seems almost deserted from the outside but you know the Military is watching you when you're near there, even if you can't see them.
