1. Atahualpa and his half-brother Huascar were fighting for the throne after the death of their father, Huayana Capac. Huayana favored Atahualpa, but tradition said the oldest son, Huascar, should ascend the throne.

2. The Spanish, led by Fransisco Pizarro, invaded the Incan empire.

3. Atahualpa and forty thousand warriors awaited the invaders.

4. On horses (which the Inca had never seen before), Pizarro's brother Hernando, along with Hernando de Soto, invited Atahualpa to a banquet.

5. Atahualpa arrived a day late and was greeted by Father Vincente de Valverde. He showed Atahualpa the Bible. The emperor looked at the book and dropped it.

6. The priest stepped aside. Pizarro waved a white scarf, and the Spaniards attacked. Atahualpa was captured as nearly three thousand of his men were killed.

7. Atahualpa offered to fill a room with gold and a room with silver in exchange for his freedom.

8. After eight months, the task was completed. (Atahualpa ordered his half-brother, Huascar, to be executed during this time.)

9. Pizarro needed an excuse to kill Atahualpa, because it was against the law to kill any ruler. Atahualpa was charged with Huascar's murder and was sentenced to be burned at the stake.

10. Atahualpa begged not to be burned at the stake, because it would ruin his body (the Sapa Inca's body would normally be enbalmed and prepared for the afterlife). Father Valverde offered to simply strangle him instead if Atahualpa agreed to become a Christian.

11. Atahualpa accepted the offer and was baptized in the Catholic faith. On Saturday, August 29, 1533, Atahualpa hanged.
