WARNING: Season finale spoiler
It appears that it was actually NOT the last episode, as the new network "CW", or "WC" or whatever it is, is bringing back 7th Heaven this fall...
The supposed series finale was to cover Simon and Rose's wedding... Mary appeared in the episode, but mostly just in a couple of dream sequences.
The episode took us right up to Simon and Rose being at the altar, but it did not show the actual "I pronounce you husband and wife" part of the ceremony...next thing you know, the wedding's over, and everyone is at the reception.
Turns out that Rose decided to go back to her old boyfriend Umberto, so Rose and Simon did NOT get married. Everyone and his mother was hoping that they would NOT end up together.
The scene shows Rose and Umberto dancing on the dance floor, and Simon says that he knows the two of them will be very happy together.
In one of your cheesier endings, Lucy announces that she and Kevin will be having twins (easily predicted by yours truly several episodes earlier). However, what yours truly did NOT predict was that Matt and Sarah also announced that THEY would be having twins... and... it's not over yet... Mary and Carlos are apparently back together, and in her only 'live' appearance on the episode, Mary announced (by phone, she didn't make it to the wedding) that... you guessed it... she and Carlos will ALSO be having twins.
At the end of the episode, we see Sandy go up to Simon, telling him that 'we need to talk'... the camera pans back and fades out as Simon and Rose are talking at the reception... leading to speculation that it is, in fact, Simon who is the father of Sandy's baby (it's already been established that Martin was NOT the father, as originally thought). So it looks like Simon and Sandy probably ended (or will end) up together, and Rose and Umberto can live happily ever after.
But, as I said, the new WB/UPN network is apparently going to be bringing back 7th Heaven this fall. I don't know how much of the cast will be intact.
(Looks like several of us answered this at the same time)
