Much of the West was acquired from Mexico in 1848 by President James K. Polk. White folks began exploring the West searching for beaver and blazing trails. Most settlers came by wagon train, some came by ox cart and others by hand cart. The Pony Express and some coaches carried some people. Another way was by ship sailing from an eastern port, sailing all the way around South America before landing at San Fransisco to travel east to the Rockies, although most people heading west settled in California or Oregon. After the Civil War, the railroad made a significant impact on the settlement of the West.
You can visit or "hike" on the several Historic Trails and see some of the wagon ruts still there on the prairie.
