The Theory of Seafloor Spreading and Plate Tectonics states that oceanic and continental segments of the lithosphere (the crust and the uppermost part of the mantle) are moving in response to the convection of the middle, and maybe lower, mantle. Although this may seem to be a huge task, when you consider the fact that the lithosphere is much smaller than the mantle it becomes easier to conceive of this movement. The main source of heat for the convection of the plastic mantle is from the elements uranium, thorium and potassium.

The tectonic plates are constantly moving. These plates aare the land masses are the continents and when they collide, earthequaes can form and even form mountains. Like The Himalayas are caused by the two colliding tectonic plated which is the reason Mt. Everast growns 2 inched per year.
