My boss has already some great leadership qualities...but at times the behavior he exhibits is just unbearable (mostly because of the lack of QUALITY communication). I would hate to lose this opportunity but fear that we may be coming to that point. Is there a way to see my boss in a different light???

My boss gives me full reign to handle my department as I see fit but it's because I keep him in the loop on everything that's important. I inform him (them really, two share the position) when something is going on or when I suspect trouble somehow. And I always do my research to be sure I give him the right answer when he needs something from me. Also, I always give him the credit if something comes up, say in a meeting, that we have previously talked about. I try to always make him (them) look good. And he (they) do the same for me. I've known them both for years and we've been in the trenches together.
Final point, I always lighten things up with a little appropriate humor. A little inside humor can really ease a difficult situation but that may not work well for everyone.
And understand that it's just a job. Life goes on beyond the office. We do our best at work but we are all human too. My boss knows that and he (they) enjoy my efficiency and thoroughness, but a little tasteful and appropriate humor every now and then too. But again, that may not work for everybody.

In my experience, bosses are alot like kindergarteners. The need encouragement for the things they do right. Tell your boss the things that you admire about him. Try to refrain from attacking him with the things you don't like. Keep a good attitude, and you will have your boss trained in no time.
