merceds benz have slipped compared to previous generations. the 95' mercedes e-class slipped noticably in quality compared 2 its predecessor, thanks 2 shortened development times. the current e-class is getten bak 2 to the good old days, but an over-realiance on technology has caused headaches at merceds-benz. 1.3 million cars had 2 be re-called after a fault was found with the companies Sensotronic braking system.
Mercedes are defently well built, but like BMW, trails its other german rival,Audi, and the cars cop a premium price-tag over other rival's like lexus's when they are very similrly built(or built better/better materials). their not the best in thw world(audi owns that title). they havnt gone down the gutter, but the 1st generation M & A Class's both had very non-mercedes build quality. current generations are better though and will hopefully give few problems.

It is the same question many people ask even about other car makes. Generally, every succeeding model has a technical edge over its predecessor.Few people get to buy brand new cars from the dealership, consequently, few get to experience these improvements. However, as the car ages, it becomes more affordable and more people can afford to enjoy it. They are surprised at how premium cars of yesterday still out-perform some of today's cars. Note that in ten years time, when the price of today's Benz will be low enough for many more people to afford, they will be more than surprised with the level of performance. As a rule of thumb, any Benz after 1991 should be pretty reliable, comfortable and solid, even by today's standards.

No the E & C are good by what I hear but the older ones are ok if you don't want a/c and don't care about the luxeries that the new ones have. I just know that if you have someone that can work on them it is cheaper cause that is where they get you on repairs. I am looking for an older 2 seater but most I have found are rusted cause they use salt in winter here. I have a friend that has an E class and loves it. My brother has an 86 sadan and its in perfect shape but starting to show problems now but it has a lot of miles on it. The early 90's they had some problems but you will have this with any make I have found. I have a 2000 4-Runner that is great but I only have 45,000 miles on it. Our neighbor just got a 2-seater last year and he loves it. I don't know what it is exactly but I know he paid 80,000 for it. Good Luck.

Depends on how you define "well built." They're still solid, if that's what you want to know. Most of their problems in the past few years seem to deal with electronics. Stuff like doors not unlocking, gas gauges not reading correctly, windows not going up or down, etc. The E-Class seems to have sunk to the bottom of the barrel in the past couple of model years, with the other models not much better.
The old Benzes were pretty well built. My parents have a '98 E-320 and it seems rock-solid.

Mercedes Benz cars are known for their elegance. I'd say the new cars produced by Mercedes are better than the old ones. Each one has his / her own perceptions about the car. In terms of safety and comfort, the new benz cars are much better. Alos the shape of the car has improved tremendously as compared to the old box shape.

I just traded my 2004 CLK Class in on a new SLK. In 100,000 miles of varied types of driving the only failure in the entire car was the coke holder. The only issue I had with the car was what I consider premature tire wear. The tires were gone at about 24K miles. I replaced them with Kumho's and got 60 K out of them.
