If you are clumsy and drop things alot, you increase your chances of failure with an MP3 player that has a hard drive. If you are not clumsy, then it's the better choice becuase you can get more storage from the units with a hard drive. Since you are going to be moving it around alot you should get one with circuit memory because they can be more durable. Take a look at the construction of the units too. Some of them aren't so durable. Many are made from pretty cheap plastic even those from Creative and Apple.

I'd suggest getting an Mp3 player with memory card availability. This way you can upgrade your hard drive space and not limit yourself. Music can be downloaded straight to the memory card and then put directly into your Mp3 player. No need for cables that can get lost or chewed on (if you have animals or small children).

I have a creative that's held up well with use in a car. I don't use it for physical activity, where I imagine it may get beat up more.
