Three friends check into a motel for the night and the clerk tells them the bill is $30, payable in advance. So they each pay the clerk $10 and check into their room.A few minutes later the clerk realized he made a mistake and overcharged them by $5.He asks the bellhop to go up and return the $5 to them.The bellhop sees this as an opportunity to profit $2 so he tells the friends that they were overcharged $3,since it would be hard to divide $5 equally between them, giving a dollar to each.He pockets the leftover $2 and goes home for the night.Now, each of the three friends gets a dollar back,so they only pay $9 each for the room which is $27 for the night.We know the bellhop took $2 and adding that to the $27,thats $29, not $30 which was originally spent. Where did the other dollar go??

The two dollars that was a tip to the bellhop is not added to the $27 to give $29 as the last sentence states. It is subtracted from the $27 paid by the three men ($9 each), giving $25 (which is how much the room cost).

So basically, each man paid $8.33 for the room, and $0.67 each to the bellhop. This gives the $25 room charge, $2 tip and the $3 change from the original $30.

There is no missing dollar.

Original bill: $30 / 3 = $10.00 each
Correct bill: ($30 - $5) / 3 = $8.33 + 1/3 cent each
Actual bill: ($30 - $3) / 3 = $9.00 each

Therefore they each have still overpaid:
$9.00 - ($8.33 + 1/3 cent) = $0.66 + 2/3 cent
for a total overpayment of $2.00 which the bellhop has.

Or another way:
Overpayment: $5 / 3 = $1.66 + 2/3 cent
Refund received: $3 / 3 = $1.00

Therefore bellhop has $0.66 + 2/3 cent from each for a total of $2.00

Mathematically you have this equation:
$30 = $25 + $5 = $25 + $3 + $2
or
Paid = Bill + Refund = Bill + Received + Bellhop

Thus:
Paid - Received = Bill + Bellhop
30 - 3 = 25 + 2

or
Paid - Received = Paid - Refund + Bellhop
Received = Refund - Bellhop
3 = 5 - 2

The above problem is attempting to make the arguement that:
Paid - Received + Bellhop = Paid
30 - 3 + 2 = 30 which is not correct.
The correct statement would be:
Paid - Received = Bill + Bellhop

The friends payed the money in advance i.e. $30 or $10 each. you say so.
The motel clerk made a mistake and paid $5 back of which the bellhop pocketed $2. Hence the friends in the end where out of pocket only $9 each

If the bellhop gave them 3 bucks back, that would be 28 (NOT 27) and he'd have the 2 -- which = 30

nothing happened to the other dollar. it just works out differently when you do the math......30-5=25. 25+(2+3)=30

Because the room isn't really $9.

You are using two different math systems to get the answers.
