Is it safe to say that how well we do at work and how happy we are depends largely on our relationship with our direct managers?

I really do like my job and it is largely because of my managers, yes. I have two co-managers (everyone here shares a position with an alternate) and they both give me free reign to do my job as I see fit. It helps to have some ownership in what you do and it makes such a difference to know the folks you report to rely on you. I helped develop the program, helped write the manual, so I feel like the department really is part of me. My managers know that so they support me as needed and let me take care of business as required. I always keep them informed and request advice when I need input too! It's great working with and for people you respect and who respect you.

I work for myself now. Hated my last job. Worked for a company that truly sucked; treated the employees like dirt (Can you hear me now?). My manager was okay, but not the greatest. She was one of those kinds of people who always have something negative to say about what others aren't doing, but fails to look in the mirror at herself.
