My car developed a "shimmy", & when I took it in for a regular oil change, I had the mechanic check this "shimmy". He said my wheel bearing was going bad, & I needed a hub assembly. He estimated the cost at $300. My dad told me that a new bearing should cost no more than $100. Why do I need a hub assembly? Is there some reason the mechanic cannot just repair or replace the wheel bearing? I admit, I do NOT know what a bearing or hub assembly is. Just wondering if I'm being ripped off. I do want to get the best care for my car, but don't want to spend money unneccessarily. Thank you for your answers.

you very well may need a new hub, depending how bad the bearing is, it could have damaged the hub and simply replacing the bearing will not solve the problem, however I would have a different person/shop look at it and then make a decision on the need to replace both the wheel bearings and hub

The bearing comes as an assembly including the hub, you can probably find the part pretty cheap at one of the chain auto parts stores like Autozone, PepBoys etc. The hub is not hard to change and requires no special skills. The most important thing is to torque the axle nut to spec since this sets the bearing preload. I would replace both sides since they both wear at the same rate. You may need a few special tools, such as torx sockets, but these are relatively inexpensive.

If you have a bad hub is because the bearing wore out and cut in the hub.
You need to call your nearest AUTOZONE AUTO PARTS get a price on a hub assembly

Call a frontend alinment shop and ask them how much the would charge you to change the hub out.

Because you will have to probably realine your front end and it is 40% cheaper if you buy your on part.

it is easyer to change the hub then the wheel bearing, some bearings go right in and others have to be pressd in check with your part store and see witch one you have.
