better for a little while, then starts slowly deteriorating again. Last time this happened, it started working again all by itself. Any ideas? Do these things actually freeze up inside because of overusage?

sounds like its freezing up, and no they don't freeze due to over use, but cause either the filter is bad or low charge, check filter, if its clean call a tech and get freon levels checked.

Yes. They can freeze up pretty easily. Take a garden hoze and spray water inbetween all the fins to remove all the dirt, grass, hair, build up. You should do that at least once a year.

That may help fix your problem.

Yes if you look inside you will see a thick frost on the things inside. Try changing the filter.

Maybe the thermostat is shot - it thinks it's too cool.

The other answers might be right - frost etc. I really don't know

this is most often caused when your AC unit is low on freon, have an AC tech check your freon charge
