If possible, find out what color the wedding party will be dressed in (sometimes the invitations will give you a clue) - avoid wearing white or the color of the wedding party. If the wedding is indoors and formal, you will be okay with an evening gown type dress. If it is outdoors and kind of informal (typical for a July 1 date), wear something bright, cute and 'flowy' with sandals with a little heel. Most importantly, wear a smile! Good luck.

You have to see the invitation to really get a good feel for this.
The dress style will depend on the time of day of the wedding.
If it is an evening wedding, you can go pretty formal. I wouldn't wear an evening gown, though, unless the invitation specifically says "black tie"
Some years ago black was considered inappropriate for weddings, but that is really no longer true, as long as it is dressy and doesn't look like funeral attire. Red is fabulous if it flatters you, but can look a little garish for a morning or early afternoon wedding.
I agree that it would be nice to try to avoid the wedding colors (so you don't look like a bridesmaid), but it can be hard to find out, so don't worry too much about it. Stay away from the "prom style" dresses too. That will definitely make you look like a bridesmaid wanna-be
Safest best is an elegant, well-fitted cocktail dress. Can be short or 3/4 length. You'll be perfect for almost any degree of formality. If you choose something strapless or that exposes a lot of shoulder or decolletage, be sure you have a little jacket or wrap for the church. It just looks more polished and elegant.

Will there be parental type people there? If so, do you care what they think of you (as in, are they related to your guy in any way that matters?) because if SO, then you don't want a halter OR a red dress! There is a certain etiquette to wedding dressing and halters and the color red fall under the "don't" catagory. A wedding is NOT about showing up the bride. It's HER day and no guest should impose on that. Ideally, you would wear a light colored (since it's early summer) pant suit or shorter skirt/dress (not mini "shorter" but right at the knee is fine). Back, chest and arms should be covered. So no halter, backless, or spaghetti straps. Sandals are fine, but nothing too flashy or too casual (as in flip flops). Finally, keep makeup light and other accesories down to almost nothing.
But, listen, if you don't care about what these people think, you just want everyone to think you are hot and your guy is lucky, then wear whatever you want. If it's outdoors, think light-weight material, but beware of silks because they will show all the sweat!!!
Whichever way you go, don't wear white. Tan, cream, yellow, or champaigne are OK, but white is for the bride. If it's an evening wedding black is OK, but if it's before 6 pm that's considered really tacky.
Have fun.

Go for a classy look. Pastel, floaty, pretty, not too low cut. An updo for your hair would be nice. And put some small flowers in your hair. Be sure the color of your dress doesn't clash with your boyfriend's uniform. If you can afford it, go to the salon to get your hair done. Relax and have fun...........
