I think the family is just stuck in the past, not really set in the 80's. They don't have modern things, that's somthing else that makes them even geekier.

The movie has to happen some time during or after 1999; this is based upon the fact that Backstreet Boys' "Larger Than Life" was played during the show that Pedro's competition put on, and that song first appeared that year.

That's idaho for ya. isn't it great?! not all of idaho is like that, just little forgotten towns, that don't care about who jlo is dating and what brad pitt had for breakfast. They like to keep things simple. And so what if their not dressed in top fashion clothing. The clothing adds to the movie and makes it even more hilarious than it already is. Not everyone can afford top dollar clothes, and coming from idaho- (yes i'm from idaho god damnit!) not all towns have malls down the street! Nobody cares here
