After you place the RAM in his place you can close all and plug everything. If all was good, then your PC will tell you (in My-Computer icon do secondary click then select Properties) that it has more RAM to use.
You could just plug all before closing everything just to see. That's not bad for your PC. Just check that everything is right placed before turning it on.
I usually turn on my PC without closing it just after plugging in new hardware just to see if they work properly and to see if all other thing (like fans and lights) are working too.
TIP: ground yourself before touching the inside area of your PC because of "Static electricity" that could discharge into important components.
TIP: Once your PC is off while still open, clean it from inside with a compressed air can. It helps for a better temperature control and better air flow.

Don't scare people into thinking they're gonna break the chip. I put around 20-30 lbs of force on that little thing and it didn't even make a sound, nor did it bend.
Turn it off, definitely. Then once it's off (Unplug the power cable if you wish, then press the power button) open the case, find the RAM slot, then stick it in, put back the case, and turn it on.
Very simple.

Unplug the computer and install your new RAM. Be advised your old most likely will not work with your new if you are thinking of using both.
Without closing up your computer plug it in & boot it. It it boots properly shut it down and close it back up.
If you hear a single "Beep" & get nothing there is a problem. Reseat your new memory, make sure it is locked in place & try again.
