An Anti-virus is only one part of the Windows security package, what you need now is an Anti-spyware and a Firewall.

But since the question is about the firewall - Yes, you do need a firewall. If your going to buy one, get Zonealarm Pro, but Zonelabs also provides a free stripped down firewall that will serve your needs.

Although it is recommended by most to not use two firewalls, I do. I have the windows firewall and a built in on my modem. I have my modem firewall set to Stealth. This way when the Malware programs ping my computer, looking for a port to use, they get no response.

Try turning on the firewall through the control panel.

START>CONTROL PANEL>SECURITY>WINDOWS FIREWALL> then click the radio button to turn the firewall on. If it will not turn on then the SP2 update to XP is bad and need to be reninstalled. Go to Microsoft.com and in the search box, at the top right, type SP2 and click search. Then download the new one. Do not worry about removing it prior to going there. It will remove the old one for you or direct you to remove it and give you the instructions how.

Chances are yes, because Mcafee virus scan only does viruses. Unless it is the whole suite. The firewall blocks hackers from getting into your computer. Hope that helps. If your firewall wont turn on check for updates.

The loose variant of the Zone Alarm firewall works particularly good, and is effectively downloaded and mounted. Go to the beneath hyperlink to get it. If you do make a decision to make use of it, disable every other firewalls you've got strolling on the gift time.
