I have a theory that what we heard around age 14 becomes our favorite music for life. Anything to that?

By the way how are answers still coming when the question is buried several days back?

Wow, I never thought of that. I think that it may be plausible, sure.
I think that, however, it could be what influenced us more at that age that sticks rather than what was actually "popular".

I know one thing: When I was 14, I was in jazz band. We played "chameleon", which is pretty funky. I was playing the trumpet at the time and was totally into jazz and swing. Anyway, the keyboardist we had was doing the bass part since nobody in our school could handle playing bass. I can remember being so frustrated that our "bass player" couldn't get that rhythm correct. I mean, she had NO SOUL AT ALL, not to mention no rhythm. I literally wanted to throw my trumpet down and start playing it myself, because I had memorized the part AND knew how to play it! The point is this: now my favorite music is FUNK, and I am a BASS PLAYER.

Cheers,
Jon

I was pretty much influenced by music at a much younger age than 14 and I loved the music back then (I turned 14 in 1982).
This was around the time that music videos came out and I think the music did stick with me a little more because of the videos but it also started becoming less original because everyone started becoming more concerned with looks than sound.

I agree with your theory. I find myself getting sick of todays mainstream music. Music I listened to between the ages of 14 and 21 was the best. The last 4 years my music taste has changed because music aint what it used to be I guess. I sound like and old fart and Im only 26!

When I was a teen there was only, Folk, Rock, Country, Classical, Gospel and Opera. Some how I got stuck on Country Western. I like all kinds of music, except Heavy metal and Metallicia. And I don't like songs that only have 5 to 10 words in them that are repeated over and over. People that write these songs has no talent when it comes to writing. Oh and I hate Rap music as well.

I grew up in the 70's when music ruled. I agree, when I started really getting into music, I was about 13/14. I listened to Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Grand Funk, Black Sabbath and Alice Cooper. Although my musical tastes have expanded drastically, I still love this music and Deep Purple is still my all time favorite band.

I dunno, during college I was big into Incubus, I thought the Morning View album was the end all, be all. But now I've been outta college a couple of years and I discovered Death Cab For Cutie awhile back, and I love every song and can't get tired of it. Also like my last year in college I developed an appreciation for jazz and listen to that when I wanna chill out.
So I guess my advice is to always expose yourself to new music; if you don't like it, at least you can say you tried. Don't limit your experience of music. I am a beleiver in you can tell alot about a person by the music they listen to, and people, especially young people change, so why shouldn't their musical taste?

When I was a teenibop and Im only 17 now boybands were all the rage so thank holy cow that didnt stick with me for life. However, Jamiroquai, Blur and Pink Floyd have stuck with me for a few years now... I think music taste changes when you grow since in your childhood some cruddy things could happen and youd be into linkin park but then once you grow and up suddenly blur's parklife is so cheerie its insatiable.... But then again when I think about it Ive always liked the same -type- of music, everything that wasnt on the radio, and ive stuck with it since.

I hope you're right , because I'm 14 right now and I've got to say I'm not ashamed at all of what I listen to, even though most people think the music I listen to is weird
By the way, I listen to the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Nirvana, Led Zeppelin, and Green Day, to name a few.

It's true that some of my favorite music originates in my teen age years. However, tastes change, and mine changed dramatically to now encompass a much broader range of music. So much so that I would rarely listen to songs that were popular back then, and the songs I continue to return to are either classics, or various genres made popular in the last 5 - 10 years.

In my case, I wouldn't be able to support your premise.
