i know they are mythical creatures but i've always wondered that!

Females lay eggs.
Males swims by and ejaculates into the water to fertilize them.
Just like any fish.

mermaids only have sex passionatly on land with humans when they return to the water they live like preganet women until thereturn to the land and give birth. If its a human it goes to the orphanage if its a merperson they return to the water.

It's really not that great a mystery. They have the reproductive organs of fish. Like fish, the female mermaid lays eggs and the male mermaid fertilizes them outside the female's body. If they were fish, they'd then leave the eggs glued to a leaf to hatch on their own, but mermaids are highly civilized and protect and care for their eggs in nurseries in their own dwellings.

They find some unwitting sucker in the real world to believe in them
strongly enough and then sing them off into a trance. Then they
split themselves in half, and one part of the imaginary creature living in the imaginal world becomes one imaginary mermaid, and the other half becomes a different mermaid.
The collective unconscious can be tricky like that.
