Actually, I'd probably try to ascertain if they spoke English--since that's the language I converse most comfortably in. Then, I'd engage them in a philosophical discussion: How do they view themselves as related to us? I'd want to know about what place religion, if any, plays in their society, and what their idea for the origins of their planet and the rest of the universe is.
Oh, and, "What are you doing here?" is also a good question.
Of course, I might just start by asking if there's a SciFi convention in town, and save myself a lot of trouble.
