Ya, there are leading news outlets in Canada and Britain that are not privately owned. Not sure if any non-billionaires serve news in the United States.

Media has always been owned by "corporate" interests, with perhaps the exception of their beginnings when a tradesman with a press could produce his own newspaper. However if you read into the history of them, you'll find that many those papers were more slanted in their views than today, the only thing that remains true in all the time that they've been produced is that they will reflect the opinions of the owner.
Frankly I'm surprised you've labeled CNN as right-wing, if you'd ask an average Fox viewer what they thought of CNN, you'd have to hear a tirade about the left-wing media. Try watching Lou Dobbs program, I've always thought of him as a straight-shooter (and I guess from his constant criticism of the administration many would label him left-wing)

Okay, first off, once the independent/alternative becomes mainstream then it's no longer alternative, am I right? But let's not argue semantics...hopefully someday, yes, some source of independent media will be as big as CNN, which is not "Right Wing", by the way; it is actually considered to be as "Liberal" media as you can get. "FOXNews", on the other hand, is right wing as hell...why do you think Bush and co live on there? The thing is, a lot of the FOXNews commentators strike me as being either extremely brainwashed or disturbed; maybe both. Scary stuff.
As for stating the independence of CBC and BBC...say whaaaat??! Huh? CBC and BBC are likely the last bastions of "Government Controlled Media" left in Western Civilization. Sure, they have their private funders, but ultimately the government signs their paycheques. The difference is they are NOT subjected to the kind of censorship normally attributed to governement controlled media. Having said that, CBC and BBC are probably the two finest news broadcasters left in the English speaking world. CNN is so focused on America only that they miss many important stories (I remember not only when CNN first came out but when they actually WERE "The most trusted name in news.") and FOX is so brainwashed RightWing/Fundamentalist Christian that you can't watch it for more than five minutes before making like Elvis and shooting the damned TV.
Unfortunately mainstream ANYTHING (any type of media: news, music, film, books, art) is produced solely to serve corporate interests. This is why, as a musician and writer, I make my own CD's in my own studio on my own independent label, and write my own stories/articles at home, and publish them on my own. Keeping it in the family is the ONLY way to avoid selling out, no matter how good your intentions are. In the end it's a question of greed VS integrity.
POSTSCRIPT: I just found out earlier today that the main headquarters for CBC in downtown Toronto were one of the 'targets' in this so-called 'terrorism bust' this weekend. Did you know that they are right across the street from T.O.'s CSIS (Canadian Secret Intelligence Service- our CIA) headquarters? That would be like CNN's Washington bureau being right across the road from Langley!

I never heard anyone call CNN right wing. The answer is no because it costs a lot to run a news organization and that means corporations or governments.

Try NPR (National Public Radio) in USA. BBC radio is good, too.

That's an opinion, not a fact. And everyone has one.
