We effectively did. The Russians stayed within the boundaries that were established at the end of World War II. We could have tried to push the Russians back into their own territory, but Harry Truman didn't want another 200,000 dead Americans.

And containment largely worked for the 40 years that the Cold War raged... We won Berlin, drew to a tie in Korea and Cuba, and lost Vietnam (but the Russians didn't win).
And the arms race effectively destroyed the Soviet economy; at a terrible cost to the US, but we won the Cold War.

The division of Europe into zones of Russian and Western control was decided during WW2 at a meeting between Stalin,Roosevelt and Churchill. It was a binding agreement.

The goal of the Second World War was to defeat Hitler -- the Russians were our allies in that war, and we did not think to question their motives when they started controlling much of Eastern Europe after the war. Both sides wanted a rest from war, and neither side was sure of the other. But in no case, did the US see the USSR as being the kind of enemy that Germany was.

Because there was no need to. The Soviet Union was of no threat, or at least no threat for a country that beat the crap out of Germany and Japan.

It wasn't a question of stopping them. It was dividing the spoils. The Soviet Union lost 20 million people in WWII, so we let them have a little vengence. Besides, we couldn't have conquered them, too.
