If you're pretty clear on the fact that people are human, colonialism is always evil. France was figuring that out in the 50's and 60's just as the US decided to give it a go. Then they killed a million or so men women and children.
Not legacy of a "good" country, but the legacy the world knows.
Even the achitects of the war ... Mcnamara etc., are sorry for it. Oops.

France backed out and left the entire area of South Vietnam unstable. So the US thought that they should step in and take over. Go figure.

I believe it was russia... the US was scared of the spread of communism, and the soviets provided arms to the Via cong so that they could fight us tooth and nail. In truth, we lost that war... Ultimately it was as senseless a war as this mid-eastern mess. I mean what is the ultimate goal in Iraq? As long as we are there there will always be resistance, so we should let them work out their own issues of government.
