If you know anyone who has hamsters, they'll give them away free. They really aren't expensive. If you get a baby one, you only need a small cage. Put lots of shavings in the bottom so it isn't cold and buy food at a pet store. Also, you MUST have an exercise wheel and something for it to chew on (pet store too). Play with the hamster every day, talk to it so it gets to know you. Early mornings and evenings are best, because they are nocturnal. If you put fresh veggies in the cage, that's a good vitamin supplement and you really don't need to buy vitamin pills. Keep the cage CLEAN CLEAN as that's about the only way hamsters get sick. They make hoards of food under the shavings and you need to dump out all the old shavings/food every week and clean the plastic cage w/ soap and water. If you don't want to spring for a "real" hamster cage, don't get glass. That will heat up real fast and kill the hamster. You can usually find the cages at garage sales for cheap, but don't get wood either because they will chew all that off. As it gets older, it'll need a bigger cage. Oh and make sure the bars of the cage are close together so it doesn't get stuck. Anyway, my little brother just got a hamster, aka i have to do all the work. Be careful and don't let anyone spray him with Windex. And if you have to give a bath to get the Windex off, wet hamsters bite so be carefuller. Good luck!

*edit* wait that's not what i meant, i mean they'll give the BABIES away free if their hamster has babies. they are easy pets but people do like them. gerbils are harder and they look like rats.

Any hamster is cheap, you need a good size cage, food, and some chew things for him/her...also a ball that they can run around the house in. or a wheel in the cage (but that gets too noisy at night and it might drive you nuts lol) Hamsters have to be active at night or they will go crazy!!

A cage, woodchips for the bottom of it, a water bowl, and hamster food.

Hamsters aren't very much money.

The cage needs to be cleaned at LEAST twice a week and new wood chips put down.

Now, I know gerbils require things to chew one because their teeth grow constantly, toilet paper tubes worked well.

All of your answers thus far are good. Also, for inexpensive chew toys (I don't recommend a plastic wheel for your hamster to run it...they will gnaw it to peices and possible get plastic lodged in their throat) save your empty toliet paper rolls and paper towel rolls. They will chew them down to nothing and it's cheap enteraintment...they must might crawl inside and take a nap. You, too, need to trim their nails periodically to avoid getting scratched. Either have a vet do this or buy a nail trimmer. Be sure not to trim past the red on their nails...this is their blood supply and they will bleed all over. Good luck!
