If your scalp is itchy, you might want to consider using a tea tree shampoo, and scrub your scalp. Not so hard that it hurts, but to manipulate the scalp so that any build up will be removed. Also you want to use some light conditioner, or one according to your hair type (oily, dry, color-treated, etc.)
The long and healthy part will come if you are not using a brush on your hair when wet...you break the shaft, and cause breakage in the middle of the hair. Dry the hair until damp (at least) then use your brush to style your hair. Also use something on your hair before drying that doesn't contain a lot of alcohol. It is drying and will damage the hair. Infusium is a good leave in conditioner. Try not to go to bed with your hair wet, it also damages the hair.
Make sure you are getting the dead ends cut off approx every 6 - 8 weeks. Hope this helps!! Good luck with your 'do.

I hear that bananas work really well, also beer included in your normal washing...but use the beer before you wash it with shampoo and conditioner...But if you wash it on a daily basis and use a good brand of shampoo and conditioner you should be fine...
