Hmm, if it's sharp pain I don't know if it is a contraction. Contractions are usually a dull ache or cramp. If it is inside the vaginal canal, it could be the pressure of the baby dropping and it's head on your cervix. The baby could be pinching a nerve. If it is rythmyic I would check it out, or lasts over an hour with out stopping it might be something. As long as you are okay pain wise, it has stopped or isn't consistent, and the baby's movements seem normal you're probably fine but for safe sake you could just call the doc and see what they say. I had the same thing at about 29 wks, it REALLY hurt. Mine felt like a stabbing pain and made me jump. I can really be painful when they hit or kick your cervix. Since you are 37 wks you are fine to deliver (as far as being full term) so don't worry about that part of it. Just trust your instincts as a mom and if something doesn't feel right go to Labor and Delivery. They will monitor the baby and you for about an hour and if everything checks out you are good to go. When you say pressure that makes me wonder if it could be the start of pre-labor. But then you said it feels like a pinch so then I wonder if it isn't. Here is what they said about labor on WebMD:
Menstrual-like cramps, with or without diarrhea.
A feeling of pressure in your pelvis or lower abdomen.
A persistent, dull ache in your lower back, pelvic area, lower abdomen, or thighs.
Changes in your vaginal discharge, which may increase in amount or become pink or reddish.
Persistent, regular contractions of your uterus, 4 per 20 minutes or 8 every hour.3 These contractions may be painless, though they make your abdomen feel firm to the touch.
Not feeling well, Fatigue, Uterine tenderness.
Just FYI with 2 of my girls I didn't get any tightening in the front, I just had really strong mentral like cramps that I felt in my back/pelvis.
Good Luck with this and your new little one to come!
For your addtional details...
It really depends, most women go through pre-labor stuff anywhere from 1-4 wks (can start as early as 34 wks). Can be more but that isn't the norm, not that it isn't possible. If this is your first it could be more like 3-4 wks. Your body just starts preparing. You'll have on again off again contractions they'll last and then go away. You may have pressure, and a lot more "braxton hicks" contractions (the random tightening you have that tightens the whole front of the belly). They start to last longer (about 90 sec) and instead of being painless, they can start to hurt. But that is your body effacing and dialating, it doesn't mean you are in full labor, it's pre-labor. It can feel real though, the thing to watch for is consistency. Anything that is consistent, and rythmic. It could be tightening, pressure, or even a weird pain. If it is rythmic it is most likely a contraction, meaning it gets stronger and then it isn't so bad, and then it gets stronger again. So watch for how it happens and how often. The good news is that it means something is happening. Hopefully it is soon, and you will be holding your baby in no time! Good Luck!

RE:
Im 37 weeks pregnant and im having ALOT of painful pressure in my vagina, what is it and is that a sign ?
The pain feels like a pinch, in the MOST awkward spot. It hurts.
I have a high tolerance for pain, but i had to stop and take a break today, it lasted for about 1.5 hours.
What is it?

At the end of the day, it's your decision and all people can do is offer their opinion and experience in this situation. Personally, I wouldn't abort as I don't see Down's syndrome as a severe enough disability to justify it. In another two weeks, your baby is viable and stands a good chance of survival outside of the womb. Several babies have survived in neonatal intensive care units from 22 weeks gestation onwards. Whilst there are some health complications sometimes associated with the syndrome, a lot of Downs children live extremely happy lives. I've known several in my life and I can honestly say that they were a lot happier than most of the unaffected children I know. They are also very loving. My mum knows a Downs lady in her late twenties who is actually an actress and has her own home. I would suggest you talk to a counsellor before doing anything drastic as they are impartial and can offer some really good advice. In addition to this, you could go and see your doctor and find out what caring for a child with Downs actually involves. At the end of the day, this is still your baby. Abortion is not something to be taken lightly and can cause you permanent psychological damage. If you decide to continue with your pregnancy, whether it is difficult or not, you will adjust to having a child who needs a little extra care. I hope you manage to reach a decision that you are happy with and wish you all the best for the future.

The baby is low and is putting alot of pressure on your pelvis. That is normal, I've had 2 kids and with both of mine I had the same type of pain. Try to use tucks medicated pads or taking a luke-warm bath and just relax and put your feet up. If you still feel like it is too uncomfortable go to your doctor or call and ask some questions. I have to agree with the others that you should see your OB/GYN. The weight of the baby may be putting a lot of pressure on your cervix which may cause this pinching. Sometimes this may cause premature labor because the cervix can no longer handle the weight of the baby - called an "incompetent cervix." This usually happens earlier in the pregnancy and your "pinch" may not actually be related to your cervix. I've had two babies and I've never experienced what you describe. That's why I think at least CALLING your doctor would be in your best interest - as well as the baby's.

I had that also with my kids, and it does hurt!! Weird, but it is all the pressure the baby is putting on you. My got so bad that when I walked, I almost doubled over, because it hurt. The baby is just making the last way down. Hang on sweetie, it is all worth it Congrats
Also, you dont need to go to the doctor..this is normal pain!!

Go to your OB. I recently had a baby and I didn't realize I was in labor at all. I just didn't feel well and my side would hurt. Doc said I was "too tough for my own good" when he checked me. The next day I delivered my son. Never second guess yourself when you're pregnant. If something feels different, or you worry it "could be something", go to your doc ASAP or even the ER. Good luck and Congratulations!!
