CDs will be fine on any stereo.~☆ It's the DVDs and game software you have to worry about! If you plan on buying a lot of Japanese music, try Tsutaya, they sometimes sell used CDs in great condition for a fraction of the price.

I think they're phasing out the anti-piracy nonsense ... because it often made the CDs useless even on a Japanese player!! But luckily CDs don't have a region code!

I've bought some, and people in England had no problems... I've also borrowed some from the library, and played them on my Macintosh without problems.

They DO have it written on them when they are piracy-protected, but I don't have any CDs here to inspect, otherwise I'd tell you what to look out for!!

Hopefully someone else will be able to tell you what would be written on the cover, otherwise I'll ask my Japanese husband when he gets home tonight!

As for DVDs and video games, they will be encoded for the Japanese system. Go here
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/browse/-/3193231/104-8592631-7966346
for DVD regions info.

Video games are also for specific regions, but I'm not sure whether it's the region codes above, or the NTSC /PAL etc thing! Japan is NTSC, and the UK is PAL, and you can't mix one type of PS2 with a different type of game...

(BTW, perhaps I should mention that Japanese CDs are famous for being over-priced??!! People are even banned from bringing foreign CDs of music by Japanese artists back to Japan, because they're SO much cheaper elsewhere! Even though they're exactly the same CD!! Companies used to buy Japanese CDs, at retail prices, in China or Korea - then bring them back to Japan and sell them at a profit!! They could still charge less than the normal Japanese retail price, and they didn't have that stupid anti-piracy nonsense!)

Yes, I have many Cd's from japan and play them in the USA, no problem. For DVD's you need to buy an all zone machine, easy to buy on the internet in the USA for about $150

CD's will play fine. But DVD's won't work unless you have a region free player. I think Japan is region 2, the US is region 1.

Music CD has no region coding like the DVD. So you can play any music CD on any CD machine.

I bought a BUNCH of CDs at 100 yen stores and they play fine on my stereo system. You do have to worry about DVDs and many video CDs though..
