I am planning on getting an outdoor kitten as a friend for my out side cat (whose brother was hit by a car).

I live in the country and need out side cats for rodent control.

There is a raccoon living some where near by that comes up on my porch at night and eats cat food. Is there any way to get rid of him so he can't hurt the kitten, or will it not hurt the kitten?

I don't want the raccoon harmed either. I really think it's cool, it's not even in a zoo.

I was raised in the city and new to country life so I would appreciate knowledgeable answers. Thanks :-D

How ironic this question is. Last weekend we dealt with the exact same problem.

We had two racoons that have terrorised our 20 plus barn cats.

Recently one of the racoons had killed two of our kittens, biting the head clean off of one of them.

They are also responsible for killing 14 of our ginea hens.

The problem went away last weekend when I finally caught up to both of them.

I shot them both and buried them on the farm.

I wasn't raised on a farm either. But you should learn to accept that there are MANY unpleasant duties that come with living this life style.

I had to kill a kitten on it's death bed the other day, rather than have it suffer any longer. It's not something I like doing, but the farm needs me to do things like this.

By the way, if you're seeing this racoon in the day time you're in for big trouble...these are night animals and having them appear in the day time usually indicates they have rabies...when they're like this they are known to go after humans too if they think they are trapped.

Do yourself a favor and get yourself a .22 rifle for the farm. It will come in handy.

Raccoons are prob. attracted to something about your house. Tightly seal your garbage cans or store your garbage in the garrage w/ the doors closed. Make sure you have no small spaces under your house or under your porch where animals can feel safe and comfortable or seek shelter from rain. Keep the kitten inside for a little while until it's a little bit older/bigger and DO NOT DE-CLAW him/her. He/she may get into fights w/ other animals no matter what you do to keep those animals away from your home. Lights for your yard and/or driveway help somewhat. Feed the kitten/cat inside or other animals will eat the cat food. And anyway, you can have an INDOOR ONLY cat and your home will still be rodent free. Cats prevent rodents form staying inside and/or forming a nest inside your house just by being there.

I don't know how to get rid of the raccoon, except maybe call animal control to catch it? But I do know that they are very mean animals, and have very sharp claws and teeth. If the raccoon thinks a kitten is cutting in to his food supply, he would kill it without a second thought. You need to make sure the raccoon is gone before you have a kitten around.

Raccoons, cute and cudly as they may look are actually very nasty critters. They have very sharp claws, and can surely hurt the kitten, and even a grown cat. They are known to be easily frightened, and will usually run off, but I'd keep the kitten near the house until it gets big enough to know the danger and to protect herself.

Yes it could hurt the kitten and it will be attracted to the cat feed and probably eat your cat feed. I recommend calling an animal control company. They can set live-traps for the raccoons (there is probably more than just one) and haul them away to somewhere else. You probably won't think raccoons are so cute and cuddly once you come up close to one caged. It will hiss and growl and I don't recommend sticking your finger inside.
