I know the president is restricted to two consecutive terms but does that mean two terms period? What about running as vice-president and would having previously held the higher office affect the line of succession?

Nope. After FDR and his 4 terms the amendment limiting terms was put in place. It's 2 terms now, even if someone comes between.

All I know is that a president can only hold office for a total of ten years that is two years if a President dies and they are the vice and take over plus two full terms if elected.... But as running for another office I doubt they would want to do that..

No president can be elected more than twice. I believe this means that a former president who has served two-terms could still hold of the office of the presidency for a third-term, if the prior president left office or passed away (since he or she would not be elected as President in this case).
