Check with the chain's legal department. Store's employee policy will generally be the rule that has to be followed unless you can establish circumstances that can contest it. i.e. an unsafe work environment exists and management is negligent in providing proper and reasonable security.
If it's a matter of personal safety, outside the scope of employment duties, (which it sounds like by the way), the store should be notified in order to provide adequate security for you as well as all of its employees while on the premises, and acting within the scope of their jobs.

Depends mainly on the chain. If you're a Walmart person, than it probably wouldn't be a good idea.

Check with company policy. A smaller chain is likely to be A) more pitied by law enforcement and B) have less stringent policies.

I'm erring on the side of caution and saying no- usually they have policies to keep nuts people from shooting up customers.

Ask your manager about company police. is there securtiy? cameras? and other survailence items? If you really feel insecure about that hell keep one just don't let it be too known.
