There are no dumb questions, just dumb people. (just kidding by the way.) Don't be afraid to ask questions, that is the only way you will learn something.
The Democrats of today are basically socialists . They want to take away from the workers, and earners, and give to the lazy people, or the "less fortunate" as they like to call them. (for someone to challenge what I am saying here, I challenge you to find one plan of the democrats that is not a social program). They believe minorities are inferior, and think they need special programs to level the playing field for them.
The Republicans believe if you work hard and earn something, you should be able to keep it. They believe in equal treatment for everyone based on ones actions, not race. Republicans believe in free enterprise, which is the reason this country has developed so greatly in such a short time.

Republicans:
The term has come in practice to refer to a constitutional system without a hereditary element; a system under which sovereignty resides in the people of the country, as opposed to a person or a small group.
It has also come to describe a number of different organizations, principles, or political movements, and/or the persons supporting such a system.
However, at its most basic, a republican form of government is one in which several states retain some degree of autonomy or independence from the central governing authority in the conduct of its sovereign authority, and does not necessarily correlate with the concept of democracy, as suggested by current convention. Historically, several republics have in fact been associations between monarchies. The Venetian Republic was an oligarchy in which the chief executive (Doge) held office for life. The Icelandic Commonwealth that was founded by the first settlers in the 10th century was also very different from any modern system.
Republics can range from the extremes represented by the original Articles of Confederation for the United States of America (USA) and the Confederate States Constitution (Confederate States of America) to the relationship between the states of the USA and the federal government under the current United States Constitution. See also federation and especially European Union.
Democrates:
The Democratic Party is one of two major political parties in the United States, the other being the Republican Party. The party under its present name was established by Andrew Jackson during the 1820s, but it traces its origins to Thomas Jefferson and the Democratic-Republican Party in 1792. It is the oldest political party in the world. Currently, the Democratic Party is the minority party in the United States Senate and the House of Representatives. Democrats control 20 state legislatures and 22 governorships. Since 1896 the Democrats have been the more liberal (in the modern American sense of the word) major party. The pro-working class, activist philosophy of Franklin D. Roosevelt has shaped much of the party's agenda since 1933; his New Deal Coalition controlled the national government into the 1960s. The Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s, championed by the northern Democratic Party, continues to inspire the party's ideas and principles.

Republicans are supposed to be conservatives and democrats are supposed to be for blue collar people. They all lie to get an office. Democrats that are really liberals republicans that are really Dem's. The only way you can be sure is if you research their voting records. (You should never vote a strait ticket) Unless you don't like anybody. Which I have run into more than once. I vote republican mostly because Dem's seem to be more liberal in general anymore. I think they lost their connection with the working person a long time ago. They seem more interested in the erosion of family values than anything else. (I don't mean that in a good way)

It's not a dumb question. It's very legitimate. Traditionally, the Democrats were to the left and supported the working man and labor unions etc. The Republicans were to the right and supported big business and tax cuts. Ideally, the middle ground would be the best and get the best from both. That's what Independents try to do.

Republicans - a bit conservative, but this varies from candidate to candidate. Some are very religious and moral. Others are progressive in their thinking.
Democrats - usually liberal, but often are progressive in their thinking.
In general, these two parties work to develop their best candidates for positions at local, state and national level. We can only hope that they can bring forward their best.
As an independent, then you only stand at the sidelines, waiting for a good candidate to come forward. You miss the opportunity to participate in the process of picking our party's choice. But if you just want to sit at the sidelines until the last moment, GO FOR IT. After all, you can only watch a horse race.

The Republicans are the party of Rich white men for Rich white men, against all others. The Democrats are the party of Rich white men for everybody. The main difference is in degrees. Both parties are just two faces of one propaganda monster of lies who works for rich white men. The republicans are into making cheap labor, stealing from the poor and giving to the rich, that sort of thing. The Dems are more inclined to play at being socially just, and to think about solving social problems instead of just blaming the victims and waging war against them. REpublicans sponsor a civil war of the rich versus the poor. Dems aren't into it, but refuse to stand up to it.
The relationship is like an abusive husband and wife; he beats her, she doesn't press charges.
life goes on till next time.
Niether of those parties is worth being a part of. Join the Greens
or some other liberal group.

Generally, Democrats stand for Government solving your problems for you. This will cost you high taxes. In recent years Democrats have stood for ANYTHING that discredits the Bush administration. They are in denial of the fact that we have an enemy that will NEVER stop until we are completely destroyed. Democrats seem to do everything possible to thwart Bush's attempt to secure are security and safety.
Republicans stand for letting you run your own life as long as you obey the law. Less taxes leaves you with more money to spend and invest. This grows the economy which in turn increases government income. It' a win win situation.
