It was written by Billy Preston and Bruce Fisher, but it was performed by Joe Cocker so you were about half way correct!

Kenny Rogers did it. At least the version that played on the radio till everyone knew it by heart. I saw him on a show a few nights ago and he really had to strain to hit that last high note. He is getting up there in age now.
