It's for noise-cancelling and protection too.

It's also called a pop filter. When you say B's and P's into a microphone you may notice a harsh thud that comes through the speakers. This helps eliminate that and makes the sound reproduction more natural.

Its a wind screen. Keeps exterior noise from comprimising the sound of your voice as well as keeps your spit from frying the electronics.
