They played extremely well and were unbeaten in their Group which also featured France, Switzerland and the Irish Rep amongst others.
However, there were too many drawn games in this group among the afore-said 4 teams. That proved Israel's undoing.
Moreover, the draws they had at home were high scoring, whereas those away were low scoring. They were always going to lose out on 'head to head' considerations.
However, the good news is that Israel have developed an ability to play against European teams and avoid defeat. This should be a good foundation for qualification in the future, with Euro 2008 the next big tournament.
Just like Turkey, Israeli football will grow and reach a standard good enough to be amongst the better nations.

Israel finished 3rd in the Group of world cup qualifiers. Hence didnt qualify. Teams to qualify from its group were France and Switzerland.
