I want to live around other young professionals in an area with nightlife/ restaurants/ shopping. I also would like to minimze my commute if possible, but enjoying where I live is more important to me than commute and cost. I have been considering taking the BART in from san francisco. Is this a good option or is there another city/ area nearby that would also be good. Any informaiton would be really helpful, I need to move very soon. Thanks in advance.

Your options are:

1. San Francisco

2. Berkeley

3. Rockridge

Anything else is going to be way too suburban soccer moms with station wagons and not enough night life (and even Rockridge is marginal). Live in the city! BART to Dublin/Pleasanton is easy, and there is nothing like it! You would probably love SOMA, the Mission or North Beach. Check it out.

Dublin/Pleasanton is pretty barren culturally. There's a large suburban shopping mall with your usual assortment of Abercrombie and Fitch, GAP, Barnes and Noble, Macy's, Applebees, Olive Garden, etc.

And that is basically it. There's practically no nightlife to speak of. For that, you really have to go to San Francisco. There are a few venues in Fremont and San Jose, but it doesn't even come close in terms of either variety or atmosphere.

BART is a good way to get around, although the trains shut down between 1 AM and 4 AM (except on New Year's Eve, Halloween, and other major event days).

In March, they finally introduced "Night-BART" service with a couple of buses travelling roughly the same routes during those times to pick up the stranded. Hopefully, people will actually ride them and convince the government to keep them running.

BART to dublin/pleasanton is easy, but getting to where you actually work from Bart might not be. You might try getting transit directions at 511.org: http://transit.511.org/tripplanner/index.asp

If you do decide to live in SF, Oakland or Berkeley, you might actually be okay driving to work since you'd be going against the commute.
