I am using microsoft windows xp recovery console from and RC.iso file that i burned onto a cd. I've been up & down the internet trying to find a solution to this problem & really all that comes up is this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q310396/ When i put in step number 3 on that list an error message comes up with: The system cannot find the file or directory specified. The same error message comes up with step 6 also. This computer did not come with an xp cd so using that is totally out of the question. I'm completely stumped and do not have any clue if you can really help me I could use it right now Thanks

Remove this harddrive from this computer, and attach it to an open IDE on a proper working PC. Then scan it fully for viruses using this PC..if theres viruses, Windows itself may be hosed, but you should still be able to save files, music, pics, etc from it even if windows is corrupt. Drag these over to the good system once they've been cleaned from viruses, then dump the 1st windows and reload. Drag these files back when done.

Step 3 in the URL you gave renames the existing Kernnel !! Since it is not finding it, it looks like your OS or parts of it have been wiped out. You need to reinstall the XP OS from scratch, using an appropriate CD for that task, not your recovery cd. If you don't have one, then you will need to go out and buy one. You man not need to re-format the drive while doing the new installation, but its not a bad idea. Best of Luck.

NEXT - Some people do it Once A Week, Or Once A Month!

Sounds to me you didn't install Service Pack 2, so you would have been majorly vulnerable to that bug that was out a few months ago...so i'de suggest formatting the pc and installing service pack 2 from windows updates first chance you get.
there's about 30 security updates there too.

access it by opening internet explorer...click tools at the top/windows update.

I doubt installing it now will help, so definately a format is in order.

Open the case, make sure the fans are working. If not repair or replace the bad one

If the fans are working leave the case open and try to boot up. If it runs then you have a temperature problem somewhere.

If that doesn't work and you have more then one stick of memory remove one and try. Mix & match memory until you have tried with each stick out at least once.

I hope one of these actions solves your problem.

You most likely have a virus. If you have a CD disk from a virus company like MCAfee, insert it and boot from the cd. (you may have to go into your bios and change the boot order to cd first). Run a virus check which may take care of your problem.
If that doesn't work, you may have to reformat. Always install Spyware and virus software before any other programs.

I had the same problem & had to do a complete restore, with the discs. Totally sucked because I lost everything, but they computer-tech said it was some kind of virus that crashed my hard-drive.

You should call the Geek Squad at Best Buy or your local computer repairman. I don't know muchg about this kind of thing, but I imagine you could get it fixed easily.
