We are visiting Chicago next week (Tuesday - Thursday) and will be staying near the Hancock building. Does anyone know of a dive near there?

Thanks in advance

If you're near the Hancock, the place to go is Andy's. It's just a little west and a little south of the Hancock. It's got a sort of "divey" feel to it, but it's great. If you go and see John Bany play, ask him about the Old Town Ale House.

And if you have nothing to do at lunchtime, go over to Andy's then too. It's the only place in the city with LIVE jazz playing at noon. The bands play all day and night long. and I think the jazz in the afternoon is FREE. Can't beat that.

The Green Mill is great, but as others said, its a long train or bus ride from where you are. And the House of Blues only books jazz acts occasionally and even then, tickets are going to run you about $20. the cover at Andys varies from $5 to $10, tops.

The Green Mill isn't exactly near the Hancock. You need to take the Red Line CTA up to Lawrence. It's only a block over to Broadway.

The House of Blues is a lot closer, just south in the North Loop.

I vote for the Greenmill too -- very authentic. House of Blues is fun and convenient, but more commercial.

I had a great experience at the Jazz Showcase downtown. It was a great atmosphere and amazing players...
