Evolution means "survival of the fittest".
The strongest, smartest animals live & the weak ones die. Then only the good traits are passed on to another generation. So with each generation the animal gets stronger & smarter. That's how apes eventually became humans - the strong, smart ones reproduced over millions of years to become as intelligent as we are today.
