Wake up, Mass, he has turned his back on America and the constitution and the very people that have elected him. (if you call an appointment and election) He has however catered to the very rich, the large corporations and especially the oil company's. My evidence is at the pump and the price you now pay.

He hasn't exactly ever been the last bastion of conservativism. He sides with states' rights when it suits his purpose. For instance, No Child Left Behind was the biggest setback for states' rights in a long time. Also, strictly speaking, an amendment banning gay marriage is not a federal law. It must be ratified by 3/4 of the states.

Bush is trying to salvage what is left of his conservative base trying to regain the people that have left him when announce his desire for an amnesty for illegals, his smoke screen of sending troops to the border with no authority to engage or arrest illegals is also part of his plan, the problem he faces,is a lost of faith by the very core of people that voted for him.His insistance of not being amnesty only adds to the his base getting farther away from him for they see it as a lie,and his gay marriage ban will backfire on him and the republicans

Republicans are for states' rights when its politically convenient for them. It's not politically convenient for them when they have a stranglehold on the federal government. Drunk with power and flush with deficit-spending cash, they have abandoned all the old conservative principles except where they happen to coincide with the Radical Right's ideological agenda. In short, most of them are hypocrites.
