It would make more sense to fix the leaks since the watercompanies lose something like 3.5 billion litres of water a day through leakages. Since the water companies have had record profits over the last few years i can't see why they can't be forced to spend those profits on improving their leaky systems.

It isn't just SE england where all this incessant house building is happening, in Scotland every scrap of spare land suddenly becomes a Persimmon or a Barratt housing estate, it not only uses up more water, it makes already inadequate transport infrastructures even worse, it puts another 1000 people in your area which you didn't want and quite frankly I would sooner have a field and trees to look at than a bunch of poorly constructed identical boxes. So if this is happening here in Scptland, and its bad news, then its catastrophic down there, but you have got to remember, town planners don't have a clue what they are doing, they put money before people.

What water shortage??? I recently got back from India, where in parts i visited despite having no rain for nine months temps in excess of 35 celcius and a poor monsoon last year there was plenty of water for all of us around in the villages. So i found it weird flying into england which is noticably greener than other parts of the world (because of all the rain we get), to find out we had hose pipe bans and a water shortage. I am considering diggin a well in my back garden, attaching solar pannels and a wind turbin to the top of my roof getting a water but rigged up starting a composs heap and then having a jolly good ol laugh at the joke of a government we have. Then i will have a jolly good ol laught at the people who vote for them and then realise all is not well *:) ps: can someone vote for me as the best answer as it will put my name in the draw for some world cup tickets. By the way im younge, and my generation a disconted with politics because the older genereations vote for wealth and not for a better future. What hope is there *:( everyones to greedy

Too right! But also it might be necessary to completely rethink the energy-geography-employment location issue.
As even Adam Smith admitted, government has the responsibilty for transport , because capitalism won't fix it- Prescott said he would introduce an 'integrated transport system' when he took office (before using it for other things..).Now he has failed after years of doing nothing,( or was it croquet?), he wants us all to suffer impractical housing schemes.
There are also periodic flood problems, so why not catch that water in more reservoirs, fix the 19% of leaks in Southern Water for example, encourage home-working, car-sharing,park-and-ride, local economy enrichment, green tech, all of it! The hands-off approach is now beyond a joke.

What does a drought have to do with living in an area? Beside growing crops, and watering lawns, water shortage has little effect on life, unless it is so major there is no drinking water.

I think it's most likely for the immigrants, but if it's for English people then there are plenty of run down houses that money can be spent on instead of building more, but unfortunately, it's the people who don't have brains that make these decisions.

Virgin do a Manchester to London service in about 2 hrs 15mins, but if you get a peak time ticket I think your looking at 100's of pounds.
And anyway, we don't want an influx of toffs up North! haha only kidding - but we don't.

People who want to live in the SE dont usually want to live in the north.
Usually a personal preference.
Often work and family are situated in the location in which they are looking.

Don't worry about the drought.. if the scientists are right about global warming, you will be up to your armpits in water in no time....only problem is, you wont be able to drink it.
