There may not be any totally straight answers, but here is a shot.
It was reported that they were secretly kept in the basement vaults of the Sun Life Insurance company in Montreal, Canada, during World War II, along with the gold bullion of the Bank of England. However it has also been said that they were kept in the Round Tower of Windsor Castle, or the Fort Knox Bullion Depository.
When World War II started in 1939, officials wanted to move the royal family, especially the children, to Canada. Officials thought it would be safer for them there, away from the bombings.
But the royals refused to be evacuated.
They stayed at Windsor Castle and sheltered in the dungeons during bombing raids.
They hid there with the crown jewels which were wrapped in newspaper to keep them safe.
When the war was over, the Princess and her family celebrated with crowds outside Buckingham Palace.

I heard a load of stuff was hidden in Muncaster Castle a stately home in Cumbria UK.
It was kept very safe there Cumbria was (and still is) a very difficult place to find, I am still pretty sure that there are no roads leading to Cumbria.
Another safety aspect was that the locals wouldnt know the crown jewels from a bag of cockles, so nothing was ever stolen!!
Hope this helps??

They were dispersed mainly to slate quarries in North Wales and stone quarries in Gloucestershire. I think they were moved out in 1939/40 and returned in 1946.
