Honey, lots of their songs were controversial. "Back in the USSR" certainly was. And "Revolution," "Revolver," "Helter Skelter" were all famous for their controversy. Lots of them were rumored to be about drugs, as well. "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds" was translated as LSD, and in "Hey, Jude" the line about "let her under your skin," and "let it out and let it in" were taken to mean shooting drugs. In fact, many argued that the entire album of "Yellow Submarine" and the cartoon movie that was made of it, was just chock full of references to drugs.
Of course, that's just nonsense. None of the Beatles ever did anything illegal.

Got a decade or 3? The Beatles IF you LISTEN to their music was OFTEN in reference to Politics, 'Number 9? Number 9? Number 9? (That was BTW a catchphrase code for a laxative...and on the battlefields, orders were often given for a "Number 9")Now, down to business, remember the song, "Give Peace a Chance..."? That's one, Revolver was laden with the onset of changing in the theoretical respectively to each of the (Truly) Fab Four. Try a Beatles Link for Lyrics....and get the point. FILLED w/ innuendos of side taking and taking leave of the world on account of it. Each Album had its girth, justice and oathes. When you refer to the Beatles, do you perhaps insinuate that solo Albums didnt count? THEY DO...though John in an interview said, "Once upon a time I was a Beatle and then I grew up..."~ he might have even said this to Sean if I recall correctly.
George Harrison took leave and a few people with him to explore his devotion, which remained with him until his demise, an all so sad event for us all..... The songs of love IF you LISTEN are not simply about unrequited love, tho' as well the love and lack therein of humanity.Contoversial? This Group changed the worlds music ~ its far extending tributaries are still winding through us...even as we lay in slumber. I STILL cannot get enough of their lyrics and my mind is truly blown at the reality checks they gave us. now, I recommend you do Your own homework, I am going to put on some tunes to jar my memory and heart of this. My answer henceforth, is YES!

Ya say you want a Revolution ....
Ballod of John and Yoko
Lady Madonna (They dared to mention "Baby at your Breast" in the song!)
As for War - most of the Viet Nam stuff was about the time the Beatles were Breaking up. Individually they did songs about the war, though.
