When you are inside your mothers tummy, your are connected together by the umbilical cord. That is how the mother passes food and oxygen to the baby.
At birth, the doctor cuts that umbilical cord.A belly button is like a scar left after that cord is cut and heals.

Belly buttons, navels, lint collection stations, stomach knots -- I've
heard them all. Belly buttons are what's left a after the umbilical cord falls
off a few weeks after birth. They mark the point where you were hooked onto your
mother before you were born, to put it simply.
