Squinting bends the lens of the eye slightly, changing the focal length and thereby making the image a little clearer.

It actually changes the shape of the lens of your eye, which may make it easier to see. You can also change the refraction of light rays, and improve vision slightly, by simply holding up one finger in front of your eye with the item you are trying to see as close to the finger as possible. If course, it is easier to get your eyes tested and have a corrective lens, but squinting works for seeing close up and the finger refraction works for distance.

Simple analogy:

Would an image of same resolution be clear if you were to zoom it or make it small?

Squinting eyes focuses the light onto the retina by removing the non-parallel rays in the outer diameter of the light circle.

When you squint your eyes, you're making your vision more focused. To verify this, try this little experiment: Form a little hole with one of your hands, and look through it at something blurry or far away. The object you are looking at should become clearer.

I squint when I can't see something far away, it only helps focus the object a little bit better.

I have astigmatism and I'm near-sighted (don't see very well far-away).

People squint to eliminate any unecessary visible items by focusing only on whatever it is that they're trying to see.

It works- If I don't wear my glasses and try to see something far away, it helps if i squint-it narrows in on whatever i'm trying to see.

I think they're trying to focus and not have so much light in their vision. Plus, I've noticed if I look above the object I'm trying to see, sometimes I can see it better.

Well yes but that way less light comes in trough the cornea and then you can see a little less blurred.

It's usually from too much light being taken into the eye at once, as when you are in different areas of light your eyes asjust to it.
