they all singled out people. salem-singled out so called "witches", mccartyism-singled out supposed supporters of communism and the patriot act-trying to single out suspected terrorists. but in salem they weren't really witches and with mccarthyism, the list of "communist" that he had was really just a list of 205 people. maybe the patriot act will look as foolish in the years to come if it already doesnt.....

there were no witches but people thought they were witches. There were communists in fact but McCarthy went too far in including innocents. Both of the above cases have to do with people committing crimes. The patriot act has to do with national security and has nothing to do internal criminal acts. Only a person interested in smearing our national institutions like that of the presidency would even imagine there was a connection.

Hysteria leading to abuse of legal rights. Salem pre-dated the US Constitution, but English common law had similar protections for the accused.

they are suspensions of basic human rights by gov't scaremongering,to grab power
