I was sitting at an outdoor restaurant voicing my concerns about my future to my father... telling him I really missed art and always wanted it to be a part of my life, but I was majoring in Therapuetic Recreation so I could have a more lucrative career... I was afraid I couldn't "make it" as an artist. A woman overheard me from her car, got out and sat down with me and my father.

She said, "Don't let fear keep you from living your life. My daughter is 19 years old and has lupus. She will probably die before she has a chance to fulfil her dreams. If you want to be an artist, screw the fear and go after it. Don't have a life full of regret when you have a life to live."

What really got me is that my mother had died a few years earlier, and I hadn't made a connection between living, really living, and doing what you think is safe. My mom did that... and she had regret. That woman who ached for her daughter's life cut so short was willing to share her wisdom and pain with me to make me see that not doing what you love, and living with regret, isn't really living. I think of her often as I am painting.

As a lump of salt thrown in water dissolves and cannot be taken out again, though wherever we taste the water it is salty, even so, beloved, the separate self dissolves in the sea of pure consciousness, infinite and immortal. Separateness arises from identifying the Self with the body, which is made up of the elements; when this physical identification dissolves, there can be no more separate self.

Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 4:12

I cannot remember where specifiacally i read this but I do recall it being an observation a taoist sage made in a book i read.
"A grain of sand is carried down the river. it cares not where it travels, but only goes"

The parable refers to us as individuals travelling through the river of life. We truely don't controll all aspects of life, like we all have been trained to believe. Acceptance coupled with a sence of embrace is key to living life in more positive and productive light.

"The definition of success—To laugh much; to win the respect of intelligent persons and the affections of children; to earn the approbation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to give one's self; to leave the world a little better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; to have played and laughed with enthusiasm, and sung with exultation; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived—this is to have succeeded." —Ralph Waldo Emerson

I'm not sure if it's the most meaningful, but one of my favorites is, "No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted." It's a quote by Aesop, and I love it!

it's actually a combination of sentences...

"Live like you're going to die tomorrow,
Love like you've never loved before,
and Let go of the little things that get in the way of life and love."
